Remaking Old Hits to Earn New Money

“Since 2004 several advertisers, including 7Up and Wendy’s, have licensed the new versions, he said. In one instance, a television program paid $10,000 to use 10 seconds of a musical bridge from one of the newly recorded versions. Licenses for full Twisted Sister songs can be in the “six-figure” range, he said.

While the concept of musicians re-recording their hits is not new, there has been something of a gold rush unfolding in the licensing world since the mid-1990s. Pop songs have replaced jingles or musical scores as the preferred backdrop for commercials and TV shows, particularly those appealing to savvy young adults and baby boomers.”

Publishing and The Internet

I have always been a big fan of MovableType and have followed Six Apart since they displaced Blogger as the “it” web logging tool. I don’t remember when I switched to WordPress, but it has been years. Since then Six Apart have made some very creative moves. Looking at Six Apart’s website is like looking into the future of Web based publishing and media management.

CBS Records

“In January the CBS corporation relaunched the long-dormant CBS Records label, which will break artists by integrating their songs into the CBS and CW television lineup and release music, at least initially, exclusively as digital downloads on iTunes. If digital sales and other online indicators (like blog activity and MySpace page hits) warrant it, CBS Records will issue its artists’ music as physical CDs.”

Sony/ATV Acquires Leiber & Stoller Catalog

“It was a gift from heaven to arrive and have Leiber and Stoller here, probably two of the most prolific songwriters of all time,” says Marty Bandier, Sony/ATV chairman/CEO who took the reins of the publisher a few weeks ago after departing EMI Music Publishing.”

Villa Muse

I saw this piece on the Austinist about a development 15 minutes east of Austin that was centered around a recording facility.

“VILLA MUSE was founded by CEO Jay Aaron Podolnick to build the most innovative studio complex and creative center in the world. Our management team includes Chief Technology Officer Rupert Neve (industry legend named Man of the Century by Studio Sound magazine), Senior VP Tom Copeland (former director of the Texas Film Commission), Senior VP Bob Walters (founder of the Power Station in New York, voted top recording studio in the world 7 times), VP Paul Alvarado-Dykstra (producer and marketing executive), and Financial Consultant Hiten Patel (former senior Vice President and CFO of The Children’s Place).”

Seems like a questionable plan until I noticed the heavy’s on the team page. Rupert Neve lives about an hour west of this proposed site.

Very Interesting.

The American Idol Songwriter Competition

Looks like the American Idol juggernaut is looking for songs. I read the disclaimer but I can’t imagine that too many people are going to be willing to just had over “All Media” rights? I might be mis interpreting the “disclaimer” but I take it to mean that as soon as you upload your file, Fox can do whatever, whenever, forever.

SonyBMG utilizing Vox for A&R

SonyBMG is not really known in the industry for innovation, openness, or much else positive. Today’s announcement is the first “positive” press I think I’ve ever seen from this meglo-conglomerate. I use “quote” positive “close-quote” because somehow they manage to include some negativity in there… A&R not using blogging will be fired. “Blog refuseniks facing the sack? Sony BMG UK adds blogging to the job description”. Nice.

“Blogging is clearly one of the major trends in music, media and entertainment. It makes complete sense for the major labels to use the process in a creative way to encourage, discover and communicate with new artists.”
